| Discovery to Smithsonian April 17, 2012 Shuttle Discovery departed Florida forever April 17, leaving at sunrise atop NASA's 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft bound for the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. It was a tearful goodbye for thousands who flocked to see it take off, and sweeter for the enormous crowds that welcomed the ship as it flew over the National Mall and famous monuments in the nation's capital.
