| This is a spare mirror for the STARSHINE 4 satellite, the fourth student project involving a spherical satellite, reminiscent of a disco ball orbiting the Earth. The object of the experiment is to track sun reflections off the mirror-covered satellite from around the world and observe how it behaves and decays over time. The launch was scheduled for STS-114, the first Shuttle flight after what became the Columbia disaster, originally scheduled for launch in March 2003. However, STARSHINE 4 was removed from the flight (before the disaster and thus not as a result) due to a more important Int'l Space Station component that needed to be launched. Following the subsequent Columbia accident, the number of remaining Shuttle flights has been reduced and STARSHINE 4 will likely need to find another route into space. STARSHINE 4 has not yet launched and there are no mission plans as of early 2006. MORE INFORMATION CAN BE FOUND HERE. | ||||
