Contained within this vial is a small sample of the first product ever manufacured in space: microscopic polystyrene spheres. The perfect plastic spheres were formed aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger on it's maiden flight, STS-6, in 1983. They are now part of the Standard Reference Materials listing of the National Institude of Standards and Technology (NIST). They are suspended in water.
