Multi-layer insulation (MLI) is the famous gold-colored material that protects and insulates spacecraft, satellites and other space hardware such as that on the shuttle. Throughout the years it has been seen on many famous probes such as the Mars landers, New Horizons and other interplanetary spacecraft; and on cargo and satellites hauled up by the shuttle, including hardware for the Hubble Space Telescope.
