This one-centimeter section of heatshield is from the Apollo Command Module which flew the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project in July of 1975 in the historic first linkup between an American and Soviet spacecraft. The heatshield protected the spacecraft and astronauts from the nearly 3000 degree F temperatures encountered during the fiery plunge back into the atmosphere.
